Hunting Equipment

The kind of hunting equipment that needs to be used on a hunting expedition depends on the species of game that will be hunted. The equipment for deer hunting, for example, would of course differ from the equipment that would be required for hunting rabbits or birds. However, there are some hunting equipment that are commonly used in almost all kinds of hunting.

Firearms and ammunition

Muzzleloaders, rifles, shotguns and pistols are the kinds of firearms that are commonly used. Muzzleloaders are special firearms in which the propellant and projectile is usually loaded from the muzzle of the firearm (i.e. from the open end of the firearm's barrel). Modern muzzleloading rifles are equipped with telescopic and fiber optic sights, which make the use of binoculars unnecessary. They are also equipped with black powder substitutes like Pyrodex, synthetic stocks, in-line ignition systems and advanced conical bullet designs. However, some hunters still prefer traditional rifles. Most regions where hunting is commonly indulged in place restrictions on the minimum gauge or caliber to be used. Some areas in the United States, on the other hand, ban the use of rifles and hunters have to use shotguns or pistols in these areas.

Firearms require ammunition- most commonly gunpowder. Buying and using firearms and ammunition requires licences in most parts of the world. Holsters are also needed to hold the firearms, and are easily available from manufacturers, retailers of sports goods, and outfitters.

Bows, crossbows, spears, lances and swords

Archery equipment such as bows and crossbows are also used in hunting. Longbows and traditional recurves are still used by some hunters, although modern bows such as compound bows and recurve bows are preferred by most hunters. In deer hunting, archery season usually lasts for a longer period of time than the season for hunting using firearms.

Deer hunting with sharp-edged weapons such as lances and swords is still practiced in countries like France. Spear hunting of deer is also allowed in various parts of the world, including Alabama in the US.

Accessories

Other than the hunting gear used to kill game, there are accessories that need to be used. Binoculars, for example, or often used to track game. Camping gear is necessary if hunters are to spend the night out in the wild. Ear protection is commonly used by hunters who use firearms. Camouflage is very important, although not absolutely necessary; hunting knives are often used to skin and dress the animals which have been hunted and killed. Hunters also use ATVs (All-terrain vehicles) and ATV accessories along with the vehicles, as well as animal calls and handheld GPS devices.

In deer hunting, other equipment such as ladder stands (ladders with a platform on top of them chained to a tree), climber stands (portable platforms with a seat, which can be placed on a tree about 4 to 8 feet above ground), deer stands and stationary blinds are also used.
